JIV/JIVE/FIVE / amusements from the web (and me)
I recently went up to Storm King - the sculpture park in Mountainville, NY - and it was a delight to see the chlorophyll escaping the leaves of the trees.  As I went through my photos marked by hues of the warm color spectrum, I noticed that the landscape and sculptures complimented each other’s composition.  Sculptures were placed according to the landscape to give the user a framed experience.  And vice-versa - depending on where the user was standing, the sculptures framed the ephemeral landscape.
But in my photos of just the autumnal foliage, I noticed that nothing framed the picture beyond the position of my camera.  So, I started playing around with the idea of frames: the perspective, angle, and depth.  What resulted was a new interpretation of the landscape.  The frame within the frame distorts the image and makes the spectator question the perspective, angle, and depth.  The difference between the inside and outside of the frame creates a distortion of materiality and dimension.  It definitely adds a layer of surreality to experiencing nature outside of the mega-urban environment.
